GRGS Take

Should you play American Dunes?

Play American Dunes when you want the round itself to be part of the story. The Jack Nicklaus design matters, but what separates it is the mission woven through the property: this is where the story that became Folds of Honor began.

It is a premium-priced West Michigan round and not the default answer for every foursome. For a destination trip, a meaningful occasion, or a golfer who values experience and purpose as much as score, it belongs in the conversation.

Why it matters

A Nicklaus Design With a Reason to Exist

American Dunes is a Jack Nicklaus / Nicklaus Design course in Grand Haven. It was built on the former Grand Haven Golf Club property, which closed in 2018. The club's official Mission page states that Nicklaus donated his $3 million design fee to the project.

Where the Folds of Honor Story Began

A 2006 tournament at Grand Haven Golf Club inspired the formation of Folds of Honor. American Dunes and Folds of Honor are separate entities; the course supports Folds of Honor by raising funds and awareness for its work.

Reverent Times

Play pauses each day for Taps at 1:00 PM and The Retreat at 5:30 PM. If ceremony during a round is not what your group wants, plan your time accordingly. For most golfers it is the part of the day they remember.
